Custom Scoring is a feature that allows for more detailed evaluation of scored questions in questionnaires. After completing the questionnaire, learners receive feedback not only on the number of questions answered correctly but also on the total points achieved across all questions.
Within the Custom Scoring framework, for example, points may be deducted if learners select an incorrect partial answer or fail to select a correct partial answer—even if other parts of the question were correct. This provides learners with a precise assessment of their performance.
To ensure transparent point allocation for learners, the following didactic recommendations should be observed:
- To provide learners with a transparent and comprehensible learning experience, the point allocation should be as open and clear as possible, and not overly complex.
- At the beginning of the questionnaire, provide learners with hints about the scoring, or ideally indicate the maximum points achievable for each task. This helps participants better assess the importance of a question in the overall context.
- Additionally, provide brief notes on how the point allocation is structured, particularly in cases where a wrong answer leads to point deductions.
Activating Custom Scoring
The feature is activated via the course settings:
- Open Settings for the course
- Select the Advanced tab
- In the Scoring section, Enable Custom Scoring
- Adjust the default point values, if needed
However, individual points are never evaluated for passing a course. The decisive factor is always the Mastery Score (in percent) which is set in the field above Custom Scoring (see screenshot below).
Display in the Course
After answering the questionnaire, learners receive feedback on the points they scored and the possible total score.
