Manually Duplicating a Learning Objective and SCOs

Modified on Fri, 3 Jan at 12:17 PM

If learning objectives and Sharable Content Objects (SCOs) are reused, changes made to them are applied to all reused elements. Learn here how to duplicate a learning objective and the associated SCOs so that you can use them without modifying the original.

Creating a New Learning Objective in the Learning Objective Directory

  • Navigate to the Learning Objective Directory. Here, you will see all existing learning objectives.
  • Decide where the new learning objective should be stored. Select the desired folder or create a new one by clicking on "New Learning Objective Group."
  • After selecting the folder, create a learning objective with "New Learning Objective."

Linking a Copy of the Desired SCOs

There are several ways to duplicate an existing SCO.

Note: With a duplicate, you can edit the text of the SCO without changing the original text. Reusable elements within the SCO (media, questions, glossary terms, references) are not duplicated but reused. If you want to make changes to these elements without affecting other uses, you can create a new element and link it in the duplicated SCO.

Option 1: Copy and Assign in the Library

  • Select the newly created learning objective. The view of the assigned SCOs will open, which is initially empty.
  • Click on "Assign".
  • Search the library for the existing SCOs you want to add and then adjust. You can search by ID or title. When you find the relevant SCO, select "Copy and Assign."
  • Then decide in which languages the SCO should be copied.

Option 2: Duplicate and Move the Desired SCOs

  • Select the original learning objective in the Learning Objective Directory.
  • Open the Actions menu next to the relevant SCO. The option "Duplicate" creates a copy of the SCO in the original learning objective.
  • Now you can move the SCO to the new learning objective: Select the checkbox next to the SCO, click on Move, and in the window that opens, search for the newly created learning objective.

Linking the New Learning Objective with the Corresponding SCOs in a Course

  • Once all desired SCOs are assigned, link the copied learning objective to a course. To do so, go to the Course Settings of an existing course – either via the course search or by clicking on the course in the Learning Objective Directory under "Use/Courses." If no course exists yet, you can select "Create New Course" in the Learning Objective Directory.
  • On the left, you will see the learning objectives already linked to the course. Click below on "Add Learning Objective."
  • An overview of the Learning Objective Directory will open. Check the newly created learning objective. It will now be added to the course along with all assigned SCOs.
