In Knowledgeworker Create, learning objectives and Sharable Content Objects (SCOs) can be reused in multiple courses. Please note that the reuse of SCOs within a single course is not supported and will result in an error message.
If the same SCO is used multiple times in a course, the system will display the error message "SCO assigned multiple times" in the editor. The error message will specify which SCO is causing the issue. Unlink the SCO which is used multiple times so that it appears only once in the course:
- Select the relevant learning objectives containing this SCO in the learning objective directory.
- Choose the SCO using the checkbox on the left side.
- Choose "Remove Assignments".
- Open the course settings and apply the changes by saving and updating the course.
Possible Solutions
The following options are alternatives to linking the same SCO multiple times in a course if it is necessary to use content multiple times:
Option 1: Link copies of SCOs
To avoid linking the same SCO multiple times, you can link a copy of the SCO in the course if needed. During linking, choose the option "Copy and Assign" instead of Assign at the learning objective level.
The copied SCO will receive a different ID than the original. Note that modifications to the copied SCO will only apply to that copy and will not affect the original or its other uses.
Option 2: Use one SCO for multiple target groups in a course
If a course contains content for different target groups, a SCO may be relevant for multiple groups. To avoid linking it multiple times, use the target group function. This ensures that learners only see the combination of topics relevant to them.
- Create one learning objective per SCO that you want to assign to multiple target groups.
- Add the desired target groups to the course.
- Use the target group function at learning objective level and determine for each learning objective (and the linked SCO) which target group(s) it is optional for.
This allows you to assign a foundational SCO to all relevant target groups without inserting it multiple times in the course.
For more information on using target groups, refer to the article Adaptive Learning with Target Groups.
Option 3: Use conditional display
The Conditional Display element is available in the editor as a structural element.
It allows you to include multiple variants of the content at the desired location in the course and link the display of each variant to a condition, such as a target group or learning environment. This option is suitable if only a few course contents differ.
For more information on using the Conditional Display, refer to the article Set Conditions for Learning Content Using the Conditional Display.
