Language Settings for Media Assets when Translating Content

Modified on Thu, 30 Jan at 5:15 PM

The language setting of media assets determines whether language variants of the media asset are created for translations of a course. Decide in each case whether a media asset should be language-dependent or language-independent. You can configure the language setting in the media form under the Language section. Learn more here about the impact on translations.

A Language Independent Media Asset

"Language Independent" means that the media asset contains no language-relevant information and can be used in any language without translation. This applies, for example, to decorative images without text.

If a media asset is set as language-independent, it will not be translated, and no additional language variants of this media asset will be created. The asset will automatically appear in all language versions of the course, regardless of the language.

A Language-Dependent Media Asset

If a media asset is language-dependent, it is assigned to a specific language. To do this, select the appropriate language from the Language dropdown menu in the media form. Language-dependent media include images containing text or country-specific illustrations, such as product representations.

During translation, a language version of a language-dependent media asset is created for each of the translated languages. You can find the language versions of the media asset under the original ID and the corresponding language filter.

For these media language versions, you can upload the adapted media asset (e.g., a graphic with French text for the French version of an image).

If you notice after the translation that language variants have inadvertently been created, you can still set media assets to language independent. This will delete all other language variants of the media asset, and the original will be displayed in all course translations.
